Day 13

Day 13 / Jan 16th

TGIF!   We have a big weekend planned, and although there will be challenges (cupcakes anyone!?) it should be pretty fun also.  Tomorrow is Camillah's 10th b-day pool party.  I don't think I'll be swimming, but will decorate and have to get things ready and all that.

Breakfast - egg/banana waffles (not really waffle like, only in shape!) and a small piece of chicken sausage, since a small somebody ate the rest. Tea and mandarin oranges

Lunch - Last night's dinner was so popular, we didn't have leftovers!  So I will be finishing up the spaghetti squash pizza pie.  There's not much left, so probably an egg with.

Dinner - Planning on the Chocolate Chili
and maybe some mashed sweet potatoes, or maybe baked?  I haven't decided yet!  This recipe makes a ton, so I think I'm going to freeze a little for a quick dinner later.

Snack - I have oranges and apples around here if I'm hungry, which I haven't been lately.

Notes - Still feeling really good.  It's not like I have a lot of energy, just more than I used to have.  I have been working on the house, finally took down all the Christmas decorations(!) and just keeping busy around here, running errands, etc.  Which usually I'm supremely lazy and don't accomplish much of this.  I've also been sleeping better, other than when somebody is crying.  Solid sleep, it is a wonderful thing!!

Day 12

Day 12 / Jan 15th

Whoop, I am getting so much closer!  Almost at the halfway point, and I can for sure tell things are going smoother.
Week 1 I really panicked and worried about what I was going to eat.  This week feels much more effortless.  Maybe because I've gotten lazy and just make eggs all the damn time, with varying veggies and fruit to go with!  I'm kind of worried about the effect all the eggs are having on my cholesterol.  But surely there's a decent trade off with the lower sugar levels?  I do have high cholesterol, but that's partly because my HDL (good) is high also.

Breakfast - eggs and banana "pancake" with strawberries

Lunch - Leftover Spaghetti Pizza Pie

Dinner - Undecided.  I was originally going to make chili, but I know at 3:00 I have to go do some shopping/errands, and may not get back in time to let it simmer properly. So we will have to see!
UPDATE: Dinner was Jalapeno Bacon Burger Balls w/ Fries - Oh Yum!  No leftovers, it was a big hit.  I also found that the no-sugar pizza sauce can pinch hit as ketchup.  Good to know!

Day 11

Day 11 / Jan 14th

Was busy today!  Took Amina out in stroller ~1 mile and stayed pretty good food wise!
I don't even remember exactly what I ate.  I can guarantee you there were several eggs.
For dinner we had the Spaghetti Squash Pizza Pie  and it turned out just great!
I like these busy days, it really helps the time go by.
I have found, the more in front of the computer I am, the more I want to snack and munch.  Soooo...this Whole 30 is all about discovering your bad habits, and this is definitely one of mine.  I need to cut back, or just play on computer when I am actually eating (probably not a good habit) but at least then I'm not wanting to snack!

Day 10

Day 9 10 / Jan 13th
Update: Oops, I guess I got off on my days somewhere, I am really on Day 10 today!  That makes it even better, and that much closer!

I almost made it a whole day without posting, wow!  Well here it is, nothing super special.

Breakfast - 2 fried eggs, apple and almond butter, black tea

Lunch - Leftover steak and raspberries

Dinner - 2 fried eggs and most of Aidell's chicken sausage  (Amina ate the rest!) Cinnamon tea

Snacks - I didn't really snack today.

Notes - I didn't really have a huge drive to eat today.  We were mostly off of our schedule, so that could have messed it up.  I also took a nice long nap, which was wonderful!  However, it's almost bedtime and I am craving a Larabar.  I'm going to drink a big cup of water and hit the sack.  Maybe I'll watch a little TV in bed, but sitting in the kitchen, close to all the food isn't good for me!
I did have a nice spaghetti squash pizza pie recipe planned for tonight, but with the nap, all I managed to cook was the squash.  So it's ready for tomorrow's dinner!

Meals for the week:
Spaghetti Squash Pizza Pie
Chocolate Chili
Jalapeno Bacon Burger Balls w/ Fries
Yellow Squash Soup
Apple Butter Chicken w/ Cauliflower Rice

It all sounds so yummy!  May I say, I am getting used to eating this way.  I feel satisfied and the cravings are mild.  I do have big plans for when I am done, like chips and salsa, and tacos!  Even a big gulp of milk, mmm, and yes those cookies I have frozen! We'll take it slow though :)

Day 9

Day 9 / Jan 12th

All I want is a freaking cookie.  ANYTHING!  I know it's because I'm hungry for lunch, and when I get even the tiniest bit late on eating, I get hangry really fast, and the cravings set in.  This morning I actually felt pretty decent cravings wise.  There was some chocolate left here by one of the kids, and I looked at it, and debated eating it.  Then I saw it was dark chocolate, and I was like "eh"  I'm not going to blow it for something I don't really care for in the first place.

The other challenge today: I am making a meal and dessert for a friend who is home from having surgery.  The main meal is compliant, but cookies, not so much!  Usually if I make cookies for somebody else, I taste test one of them, to make sure they are done, and I didn't mix up sugar and salt or something.  How am I going to do this today?  I guess I'll just send them, and if they suck...I guess she'll just think I'm a crappy cook.  But seriously, there is something magical about brown sugar and butter. *sobbing* Okay, let's go!

Breakfast - Chicken apple sausage by Aidells, fried eggs, a pear and black tea

Lunch - Left over beef and sweet potatoes

Dinner - An apple and a much later a Larabar while I was cleaning the kitchen.  I know not good at all, but a tiny somebody was having a meltdown.

Snacks - Apples

Notes: Go away cravings!  Scale is doing pretty much the same thing, I love it!
Update: There were several cookies that didn't fit into my container, and the hubs was here to taste test.  He ate a couple, so I know they turned out okay!  The few that remained went into the freezer to enjoy ~22 days from now ;)

Day 8

Many apologies, I must have gotten mixed up on my days, so 8 was apparently pretty uneventful!

Day 7

Day 7 / Jan 10th
ONE WEEK!

Whoo hoo, made it one sweet week!  I am feeling okay with it, but it still feels like there's a long way to go.  And I'm still occasionally getting cravings.  This morning I also snuck a peek at my weight, and it was super low!  Like the lowest I have been in a very long time!  This marks about 6lbs I've lost, in a week!
For those of you who don't know Whole30 isn't just a diet, it's a chance to press Reset on the bad eating habits you have picked up.  I have a horrible, terrible sweet tooth, and this is my way to kick it.  Not that I'll never have sugar again, it's just to make you aware how dependent you were on it, and to get better control over yourself!
On the Whole30 you are not allowed:
Sugar (obvs!) not even natural sweeteners like honey, agave, etc.
Dairy
Grains
Beans/Legumes
Soy
Alcohol (NBD for me)
And some other things.
While I've been sticking to all compliant foods (other than my Day3 tiny slip up), the rules I haven't been sticking with: not weighing yourself.  Whoops! And not recreating sweet treats.  I've only done this a little, with the frozen banana/AB/CP slices.  It's not a regular occurance, and I didn't eat 50 of them.  Maybe 3-4 (~half a banana)  They encourage fruit sparingly, and I'm doing okay on that.  They also discourage eating too many dried fruits, and I have done it a little bit as well.  Those Larabars are good! Anyways, that's all my digressions.  It's rather long, but I still feel I am doing well, and working on my weak spots.  I was a serious sugar junkie and going cold turkey!

Breakfast - Sweet and Savory Blueberry Tortilla (it's neither tortilla or pancake. More like an omelet with blueberries instead of veggies)  It was pretty decent, but kept thinking "Oh  man would this be good with some blueberry syrup!" Bad Nicki, Bad!!

Lunch - Don't know what I'm having quite yet. I had a late breakfast, so probably nothing?  Perhaps an apple to tide me over to yummy dinner!

Dinner - Pomegranate Jalapeño Shredded Beef with mashed sweet potatoes and guacamole (doesn't this just sound divine!?)

Feelings - Tiredness.  In fact last night I was really tired and cranky.  I drank 2 big cups of coffee this morning to combat it!  Last time I did this, it just made me dizzy, so who knows.  I'm sure today is going to feel funny no matter what I do.

Exercise - hoping to get on the treadmill a bit later.  Will update if I do!

Notes: Today is Camillah's 10th Birthday!  Yay!
I also need to get my bum to the store sometime this weekend, and come up with another week of healthy meals!

Day 6

Day 6 / Jan 9th

Today was a busy morning for me. Had to get everything done earlier than usual, since Amina had a play date!  Because of this, I only had time to eat an apple on the run.  So, by the time I got home, I was really craving cookies, crackers, toast, anything grainy!  I am learning to not let myself become "hangry".  I am really looking forward to chips and salsa again, and cheese, and bread. Of course sweets, but today I am not really into that, which is really surprising me!

Breakfast - Apple, Chai tea

Lunch - Two fried eggs, half avocado, salsa and apple with almond butter

Dinner - I was thawing out a chuck roast in the fridge, and it's not quite done.  Since it won't be ready until tomorrow, I am thinking we will have Thai Green Curry leftovers, or I will let Cam and hubs have that, and I'll  have more eggs/avocado.  There's also a zucchini I could shred and mix with avocado as well!  I've got options.

Feelings - Decent.  Some cravings

Notes:  I am going to have to start meal planning for next week.  I need ideas, as I;ve really exhausted everything I've bookmarked!

Day 5

Day 5 / Jan 8th

Hello!  Today we had to run to Walgreens early this morning, and I found they have freeze dried fruit.  Apples and strawberries were the only ingredients!  So I got a pack of each, and I think this may be a better quick option for Amina than the Gerber yogurt melts. I tasted one and think they are pretty good. She likes them too!

The plan today is:

Breakfast - Tea and an apple

Lunch - Leftover spaghetti sqaush/sauce

Dinner - Thai Green Chicken

Snacks - Not sure, but still  have a little guacamole and celery sticks, so probably that!

Feelings - Fine, not overly hungry.  Planning on getting a little exercise today, as yesterday was spent running around it felt like.

Notes - I took a sneak peek at the scale this morning!  Wow, I haven't weighed this since maybe my early pregnancy days when I was sick all of the time!

Exercise - Walked/Ran 1.25 miles ~100 calories burned

Day 4

Day 4  / Jan 7th

Today we had a MOPS meeting, and it was my table's turn to bring breakfast.  I made the omelet muffins (again!) with tomatoes, onions and an orange bell pepper as the mix-ins, with a chipotle salsa on top.  Yum!  I think they were well received!  I did manage to steer clear of the yummy cinnamon bread and oatmeal others brought!

Breakfast - Omelet muffins, fruit, black coffee

Lunch - Shredded steak w/ onions and peppers, celery and guacamole
This was something Mack brought from the hospital, it looked so good and I don't think it had any questionable ingredients

Dinner - Leftover night.  DH and Cam had leftover shrimp, and I had spaghetti from previous night.  I'll probably have that for lunch tomorrow as well!

Snacks - Some fruit, a little banana with almond butter/cocoa powder

Feelings -
I feel a lot better today.  I also had some black coffee, and I think the caffeine helped  me to feel "normal" again!

Day 3

Hello again!

Today is Day 3, and boy did it start off pretty bad!

Extreme nausea woke me up at around 6am.  I went to bathroom, sure I was going to throw up, but didn't.  Worried it was because of low blood sugar, I ate an apple.  I was okay for 30 minutes or so, then up came the apple.  I still felt crappy, drank a little water and thought I was going to be sick again.  So I was weak, and gave into my head, and had a very small amount of cereal and a Larabar.  I didn't want to feel like this all day, especially while taking care of Amina!  After the cereal, I felt better.  However, later in the  morning, I stood up quickly to say something to somebody, and my vision went black, and I couldn't finish what I was saying, it kind of slurred together.  Not sure if I was scared and just quit talking or what.  I *almost* fainted completely, and could feel myself swaying, but it left pretty quickly and I was able to stay standing.
So, later, I am feeling better.  I am really hoping this is due to the "carb flu" and I'm sure my insulin resistance is playing a part in this feeling.  I hope today was the only day!

Breakfast - Small bit of cereal, Larabar, tea

Snack - Half of a banana with almond butter

Lunch - Egg Omelet leftovers with guacamole, celery sticks and a couple small slices of banana (with a dusting of unsweetened cocoa powder) and sparkling water with lime juice.

Dinner - Planning on having a Bolognese sauce over spaghetti squash "noodles", with some sweet potatoes.  Not quite sure how I'm going to make them yet!

Pre-bedtime snack - Half of a banana, cut in slices, with almond butter sandwiched in between, dusted with unsweetened cocoa powder, frozen!  I haven't had it yet (it's not my bedtime) but I think it'll be yum!

Feelings - Better than this morning!  Back to my usual self

Exercise -  Walked 1.5 miles with baby on my back.  Treadmill said I burned 120 calories.

Notes:
Everybody really liked almond butter shrimp and the cauliflower risotto last night!  I offered peaches after  we ate, but nobody took me up on them, so I think we were sufficiently full!

I do want to make this a complete Whole 30, so I will add on a couple of days at the end!

Day 2

Here we are at Day 2, and I'm already feeling better about the cravings.  I have already used up half of the veggies I thought I would use for several days, yesterday.  So I am making a store run today.  Also picking up some more fruit, and more zucchini for the spiralizer (fun tool to make noodles)!

Here's the outline for today.

Breakfast - Two fried eggs and a kiwi

Snacks - Nuts, blueberries

Lunch - Bell pepper, Olive, Mushroom and Spinach Omelet "Muffins" based off of this recipe here, salsa, leftover salad from last night's dinner, and a pickle.

Dinner - Almond Butter Shrimp with Cauliflower Risotto.

It's just now a little after 1pm, so we will see how the rest of the day goes.  Camillah is also doing the Whole 30 with me, at least while she is here this week!

Day 1

Hello!  I'm here to blog about my Whole 30 journey, to help keep myself accountable.

Day 1 - January 4, 2015

Cravings were pretty bad.  I really wanted to get rid of the chocolate that I know is in the snack drawer, but DH wants it for himself.  So all I can think about is putting one of the Hershey nugget on my tongue and letting it melt!  But I didn't eat one!  I am also fantasizing about making brownies, muffins, cake, or anything else sweet.  But, I did it, one entire day without sugar (other than some fruit).  Surprisingly, I'm not really missing dairy, grains, or beans, any of  the rest of it.

Breakfast - Omelet w/ tomato, onion and salsa

Snacks - Unsweetened coconut flakes, pecans, pistachios, a couple of frozen blueberries

Lunch - Zucchini noodles with spaghetti sauce, hash browns and a pickle

Dinner -  Zucchini Noodles with Butternut Squash Sauce, Salad with Lemon Dijon Vinaigrette and some pear slices

Feelings - Hanging in there, just barely!
